1:45 update

Dad is still doing fine. The benadryl finally wore off around 12:30 so he had some lunch and has been doing some work on his laptop. There's about 15 minutes left to this first bag of chemo and then on to the second bag which will take an hour, the 3rd will take 1 hour and 15 min, and the 4th and final bag today is about 1/2 hour. So we should be out of here around 5:00. I'll post again later.

  3. no Culver's run...he must have been delusional when he said that! It was a homemade sandwich, banana, and yogurt. Thanks for your comments, Matt and Shanna...he enjoys hearing these!

  4. TMI questions for Leo:

I can imagine all of these fluids give you an overhydrated and bloaty-feeling, is that true?

Also, does he like the new port better than the old one since it doesn't have to be protected when he showers? Seems like a cool technology compared to the last one.

  5. yes between the saline iv, the chemo iv and the fact that nurse Ratchet is highly recommending large glasses of water (again, the one chemo is hard on the kidneys and he is to drink lots of water for the next 3 days), he is making frequent trips to the bathroom. They have to monitor his outake today and he says he is almost overflowing the container that he uses! He actually just got back from a trip to the bathroom and I heard him telling the nurse something about his dancing partner. About the time I thought he was talking about me...I realized that he was talking about the pole on rollers with the 2 bags of the iv solutions hanging on it!

Next question about the port: He says it appears that he is going to like the port better, but hasn't had much of a chance to know. He was just able to shower with it without a covering over the port yesterday. Today, for the chemo, they put a needle into the port to allow the chemo to flow in. This is called an infusion set (see photo of the port from the other day). They had to numb the area over the port before inserting this today. This needle and apparatus will stay in for the 3 days of the chemo. It is taped on to his chest over the port and he can sleep with it as long as he sleeps on his side or back. He cannot get it wet as long as the needle is in it so we'll have to cover it with plastic and tape and water still should not get directly on it. Once the needle is taken out on Thursday, he can then take a normal shower which will be nice.
It sure beats the heck out of the picc line where we made numerous trips to the farm store to buy veterinary calving gloves (to the shoulder) to put on his picc line arm and tape around his armpit. Both of us in a farm store was humorous enough!

  7. I don't think it's possible to insert a picture when commenting, but this is for Leo (little thing I threw together on my lunch hour):
